Vitiligo Surgery FAQs

Who is an ideal candidate for vitiligo surgery?

Surgery is most successful for "stable" vitiligo. This means the white patches should not have increased in size, and no new patches should have appeared for at least 6 to 12 months. Stability is the most important factor for long-term pigment retention.

How long does it take for the color to return?

Repigmentation is a gradual process. After surgery (like MKTP or Punch Grafting), the initial pigment usually begins to appear within 4 to 6 weeks. Full coverage and natural color blending typically take 3 to 6 months to complete.

Will the donor area have visible scars?

We typically take donor skin from hidden areas like the upper thigh. With advanced techniques like MKTP, only a very thin layer is used, which heals quickly without leaving a thick scar. The donor site usually returns to a near-normal appearance within a few weeks.

Is the surgical procedure painful?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you will not feel any pain during the surgery itself. Post-operative discomfort is minimal and can be easily managed with routine painkillers prescribed by Dr. Sharda.

Can surgery be used for patches on the lips or fingertips?

Yes, surgical methods like MKTP are often the preferred choice for difficult-to-treat areas like the lips, fingertips, and joints, where medical creams and light therapy often show limited results.
